Isolating Master map document from Published map document

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

In order to avoid unwanted changes in the ArcGIS Server Map Service, it is therefore recommended to strictly isolate the

Master map document (this document gets updated and changed whenever it is necessary to change it and gets backed up regularly) from the

Published map document (this document gets published to ArcGIS Server and resides in directory <ArcGIS Server location>\ServiceDocuments)

This way you can easily do changes to your Master map document without risking that map document changes propagate through the system (ArcGIS Server Standard, WebOffice 10 R3) although you do not want.

Note: As a consequence, you need to copy over the Master map document to the location where the Published map document is stored every time you want to update your ArcGIS Server Map service. It is recommended to create a directory ServiceDocuments in the ArcGIS Server location (<ArcGIS Server location>\ServiceDocuments). See below for details.

Note: Using the directory <ArcGIS Server location>\ServiceDocuments> provides a significant advantage:

All map documents are stored in one central location and therefore can be maintained, managed and backed up easily.
