msd based Cache

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Fast dynamic map services have the advantage of best anti-aliasing for features and labels next to their original destiny of displaying dynamic content fast. Msd based caches are smaller and faster to generate than mxd based caches.

To role out a msd based cache, first open the mxd file your map service is based on. Open the Map Service Publishing toolbar. Click the Analyze Map button and solve the errors occurring in the Prepare window. Review the entries on Warning and Message level and solve them to optimize your map if needed.

After revision of your mxd preview your map and change anti-aliasing properties if needed.

After all necessary changes are done, save your mxd and the map service definition (msd) via the Save Map Service Definition button of the ArcMap Map Service Publishing toolbar.

Note: Do not publish your map service definition to ArcGIS Server.

Switch to ArcCatalog and stop you map service. Open the Service Properties and go to the Parameters tab. Change the reference of the map service from the mxd file to your previously saved msd file.

Confirm your changes and start the map service. Go to the Service Properties of the running map service and switch to the Caching tab. Create the cache tiles for the needed scale levels.

After creation of the msd based cache tiles, stop the map service again. Enter the Service Properties and go to the Properties tab. Change the reference of the map service from the msd file to your previously used mxd file. Confirm your changes and start the map service.

With the configuration described above you now have full capabilities of querying layers (mxd based map service) but use the advantages of fast cache generation and anti-aliasing.
